Fuel dispenser pump protocol to a PC — looking for a documented handshake

Need a PC to talk to a retail dispenser pump for a small yard. Not looking for a cracked binary. Has anyone used a documented serial or TCP handshake that the OEM will still support, and what did you log so the state inspector stays happy?

Go through the OEM protocol license. The yards that stayed legal used the vendor TCP gateway and logged every authorization with a timestamp and attendant ID. Rolling your own serial sniff will bite you at inspection. If the OEM is slow, a licensed third-party POS driver is still cleaner than a reverse-engineered frame.
