Siemens S5 & S7 to TIA Portal migration: Off S5 and S7-300. Into TIA Portal.
Step 5 and Step 7 programs moved to S7-1500 or S7-1200 in TIA Portal. Scoped at the machine, staged around your outage windows, and brought live on the floor.
Why now
The spare-parts shelf sets the schedule.
- 01
S7-300 is phased out
Siemens announced the phase-out of S7-300 and ET 200M on October 1, 2023, and on October 1, 2025 they became spare parts only. The spare-parts clock runs about ten years from the announcement.
- 02
S5 is long out of production
Step 5 systems still run lines, but new S5 hardware has not been built for years, and the people who wrote those programs are retiring.
- 03
Old software, one old laptop
Step 5 and STEP 7 V5.x (SIMATIC Manager) projects often live on one aging laptop. TIA Portal puts the controller, the HMI, and the drives in one current project.
What moves where
Old iron in, current platform out.
The usual path. The right one for your line comes out of the audit: I/O count, networks, and how much outage you can give it.
- S5-115U, S5-135U, S5-155US7-1500
- S7-300 and S7-400S7-1500, or S7-1200 on small machines
- Step 5, STEP 7 V5.x / SIMATIC ManagerTIA Portal
- MPI and PROFIBUS DPPROFINET, with PROFIBUS where it stays
- OP / TP panels, WinCC flexibleComfort Panels and WinCC in TIA Portal
How we migrate
Planned at the machine. Proven on the floor.
- 01
Audit at the machine
Programs, hardware configuration, networks, and everything connected: panels, drives, and the other controllers on MPI or PROFIBUS.
- 02
Convert, then clean up
An S5 program is converted to S7 first, and the converter output needs rework by hand. The jump from S7-300/400 to S7-1500 changes addressing and some instructions. We rework and document the code as it moves.
- 03
Stage the hardware
Move the project into TIA Portal on the existing S7-300 or S7-400 first and swap the CPU later, or keep the distributed I/O and field wiring while the controller changes. We lay out the options and the outage each one needs.
- 04
Test before cutover
Logic, I/O mapping, and panel tags checked before the outage, with a way back to the old controller if the line needs it.
- 05
Cut over and prove
On-site through the outage and startup: cycle, safety, and operator acceptance before we leave, then documentation and a clean handoff.
Straight answers
Migration, answered.
Can a Step 5 program be converted automatically?
Partly. Siemens' S5-to-S7 converter handles much of the code, but not all of it, and the result needs review and rework by someone who reads S5 before it runs your line.
Can we move to TIA Portal before replacing the S7-300?
Yes. TIA Portal supports S7-300 and S7-400, so the project can move first and the CPU swap to S7-1500 can follow in a later outage.
Do you have TIA Portal licenses?
Yes. We carry licensing for current TIA Portal versions.
Can the migration be done in stages?
Yes. Controller first and I/O later, one line at a time, or the whole cell in one outage. The plan follows your outage windows, not the other way around.
What should I send with a migration RFQ?
The Step 5 program files or the archived STEP 7 or TIA Portal project, the hardware list or drawings if you have them, a photo of the rack, and your outage window. Zip the files and upload them with the form on this page. Line down? Call (959) 232-1657, 24/7.

Send the Step 5 or Step 7 project.
Platform, symptom, and outage window. It lands in the sales inbox, and we come back with a plan, not a brochure.
New customer? Send a competing quote too, and we will tell you if we can come in 15% under it.
